Nel 2012, scienziati, in Cina, durante un osservazione, con spettrometro e videocamera, di un temporale hanno registrato almeno un fulmine globulare. All'inizio non riuscivano a spiegarsi cosa fosse ( anche perchè i fulmini globulari non sono scientificamente provati), c'è voluto più di un anno di lavoro di laboratorio, ma ora gli scienziati della Northwestern Normal University di Lanzhou, Cina, pensano di sapere cosa ha causato l'apparizione spettrale.La spigazione data dai tecnici è la seguente: lo spettrometro ha rivelato che il fulmine conteneva tracce di silicio, ferro e calcio. Un fulmine ha colpito il terreno,facendo saltare una nuvola di nanoparticelle dal suolo, queste particelle cariche possono fondersi in palline o raccogliersi intorno ad oggetti non-conduttori, emettendo una luce globulare,questa sarebbe la spiegazione per la quale nel corso dei secoli oggetti di questo tipo sono stati visti aggrappati ad alberi o entrare in stanze o vicino a finestre di legno.
