Researchers from Texas State University have used forensic astronomy to uncover new details about the portrait of Claude Monet : Sunset - a seascape amazing that the master impressionist painting during a trip to the coast of Normandy in 1883. Their findings, published in the February issue of 2014 of the magazine Sky & Telescope , reveal the place and the time in which Monet painted the work . The result is based on extensive research of astronomical data . Guided by astrophysicist Donald Olson , the team went on the cliffs of Normandy in 2012, where they used postcard size replicas of the works of Monet to identify the precise point of view from which he painted Sunset . Once you have identified the place , they used a planetarium software to determine what , in a sky of the 19th century , he had been focusing on the position of the moon and the sun. Monet created a series of paintings during his three-week trip in winter in the region, even though sunset is the only one that includes the sun down, shown to the right of a cliff with the sea and a rock formation in the form of needle . Based on their calculations , they concluded that Monet must have painted the work between February 3 and 7 .
