Mexico inquinamento ambientale(rischio livello 4)- Mexico:enviroment pollution

Authorities Sunday, August 10, imposed restrictions on the water supply to several towns and cities in northwest Mexico, after toxic substances from a nearby mine reportedly turned a river orange, killing fish and livestock. The mine "spilled approximately 40,000 cubic meters (1.4 million cubic feet) of sulfuric acid" into the Bacanuchi River, a tributary of the Sonora River, the federal prosecutor for environmental protection, PROFEPA, said. The restrictions affect seven municipalities, fed by the 420-kilometer (260-mile) river, including the Sonora state capital, Hermosillo, which is home to nearly 800,000 people. Local media broadcast pictures of orange water, which reports said had killed fish and cattle, and is affecting milk production. PROFEPA ordered the mining company, Buenavista del Cobre, part of Grupo Mexico, to make "full remediation" for the spill, including neutralizing the sulfuric acid with lime, building dams to prevent further runoff and pumping out the contaminated water. Meanwhile, authorities are continuing their search for waste contamination and are preparing for possible legal proceedings against the company. Sonora state, which accounts for 27% of all Mexican mining, is the country's leading producer of gold, copper, graphite and a number of other mined products. In August last year, a trailer-truck carrying cyanide for a Sonora gold and sliver mine overturned, contaminating the Yaqui River. This caused a shortage of drinking water, human illness and the death of reptiles and birds.

L'Equazione della felicità - The equation of happiness

This is the happiness equation, where t is the trial number, w0 is a constant term, other weights w capture the influence of different event types, 0 ≤ γ ≤ 1 is a forgetting factor that makes events in more recent trials more influential than those in earlier trials, CRj is the CR if chosen instead of a gamble on trial j, EVj is the EV of a gamble (average reward for the gamble) if chosen on trial j, and RPEj is the RPE on trial j contingent on choice of the gamble. The RPE is equal to the reward received minus the expectation in that trial EVj. If the CR was chosen, then EVj = 0 and RPEj = 0; if the gamble was chosen, then CRj = 0. The variables in the equation are quantities that the neuromodulator dopamine has been associated with in previous neuroscience studies. Credit: Robb Rutledge, UCL

The happiness of more than 18,000 people around the world was predicted by a mathematical equation developed by researchers at UCL, the results show that happiness moment by moment, does not reflect how well things are going, but if things are going better than expected. The new equation predicts with exact precision how happy people say they are from moment to moment, based on recent events, such as the rewards that receive, and the expectations they have during a decision-making task. The scientists found that the total wealth accumulated during the experiment was not a good predictor of happiness. Instead, the moment-to-moment happiness depended on the recent history of rewards and expectations. These expectations were dependent, for example, by the fact that available options could lead to good or bad results. The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, has investigated the relationship between happiness and reward, and the neural processes that lead to feelings
are at the center of our conscious experience, such as happiness. Before now, it was known that life events affect the happiness of an individual, but not exactly like the   happiness of the people evolving from moment to moment, something new equation can predict. The research, which examines how and why the change from moment to moment happiness in individuals, it could also assist governments to implement measures of well-being in the population, to inform policy, providing greater social understanding. This is particularly relevant for the UK, following the   launch of the National Welfare in 2010 and for the following annual reports on 'Measuring National Well-being'. For the study, 26 subjects completed a decision-making task in which their choices have led to monetary gains and losses, and have been repeatedly invited to answer the question 'how happy are you now?'. The neural activity of the participant was also measured during the task using functional magnetic resonance imaging and from these data, scientists have built a computational model in which the self-reported happiness was tied to recent rewards and expectations. The model was then
tested on 18,420 participants in the game 'What makes me happy?' in a smartphone app developed at UCL called 'The Great Experiment of the Brain'. The study's lead author, Dr. Robb Rutledge (UCL Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging and the new UCL Centre Max Planck Institute for Computational Psychiatry and   aging), said: "We expected to see that the recent awards cared happiness from moment to moment, but we were surprised to find how important expectations in determining happiness. In real world situations, the benefits associated with lifestyle choices, such as starting a new job or do not get married are often carried out for a long time, and our results suggest that expectations related to these decisions, good and bad, have a great effect on happiness. "The data of the large and diverse population that uses the app for smartphones that we have developed show that the same equation applies to thousands of happiness of people around the world. " The team used functional magnetic resonance imaging to show that the neural signals during decisions and results in an area of the brain called the   striatum can be used to predict changes in happiness from moment to moment. The striatum has a lot of connections with dopaminergic neurons, and the signals in
this area of the brain is thought depend at least in part by dopamine. These findings raise the possibility that dopamine may play a role in determining

Scoperti nuovi geoglifi a Nazca - Discovered new geoglyphs in the Nazca

Strong winds and sand storms in Peru have revealed previously unknown in the ancient geoglyphs Nazca lines. Eduardo Herran Gómez de la Torre, a pilot and researcher, has found new forms while flying over the desert last week. He believes that one of the geoglyphs depicting a serpent 60 meters long and 4 meters wide, close to the famous "hummingbird". A bird, a camelid (probably a knife) and a zig zag are among the lines that are etched into the ground on the hills in the valley of El Ingenio and Pampas de Jumana. Archaeologists are already trying to see if they match the Paracas culture in the Ica region of Peru, which flourished from 800 BC 100 B.C.  Sota Ruben Garcia, head of the archaeological site of Ica, told the newspaper El Comercio that the latest discovery was "a valuable contribution to the knowledge of the ancients   inhabitants of Nazca. " An archaeologist, Goldsmiths Giuseppe Pecci, said that the geoglyphs have confirmed the close relationship between the ancient works of art and water. The Nazca Lines cover an area of approximately 280 square kilometers and is believed to have been drawn in the ground between 500 BC and 500 AD. UNESCO, which has designated the area a World Heritage Site in 1994, describes the Nazca Lines as "a unique and magnificent artistic achievement that is unrivaled in its size and diversity throughout the prehistoric world ". Their quality, size and continuity of the fit of the greatest enigmas of archeology and is believed to have been used for ritual astronomical. Animals, birds, insects, plants and imaginary beings are represented as lines and geometric figures several kilometers long. The largest creature of the 285 geoglyphs is a pelican, draw the most famous include a spider, a monkey and a lizard. A strange creature has two human hands, one with only four fingers.

No, it is not an alien colony, a time machine, or even a Russian version of the American program HAARP. But in a forest near Moscow, this "machine for lightning "Soviet era has a capacity equal probably to the entire production of electricity of Russia. Curious flock to see this wonder technique, which has been dubbed the "High Voltage Tesla Generators Marx and Research Facility." The machine is a branch of Russian Electrical Engineering Institute, is located in the isolated town of Istria, 40 km west of Moscow. And 'situated in a forest area near the monastery of New Jerusalem on the outskirts of the city. The testing device secret high voltage was built in the late 1970s to test insulators, to protect vehicles, aircraft and electronic equipment   against lightning. The structure is unique; no such thing exists in the world, mainly because of its exceptional ability to charge. At its operational capacity to spike generator (called Marx), when lightning discharges on a platform isolated, it has the same power to all systems of power generation in Russia,
including thermal, hydro, nuclear, solar and wind power plants combined. But only for about 100 microseconds. The Marx generator was called after the German electrical engineer Erwin Otto Marx described it in 1924. In Russia is known as the Arkadyev-Marx generator,   as the Russian physicist Vladimir Arkadyev and his collaborator, renowned scientist Nikolay Baklin. The "machine bolt," Istra unprecedented in its ability to discharge, consisting of 3 MW capacity transformer cascade; Megawatt voltage pulse generator 9 (PVG), which measures 39.3 meters in height, capable of creating 150 meters of artificial lighting, which is believed to be the largest in the world; and a unit of constant voltage 2.25 MW.
The test bench emits a flash of capacity on a special platform strongly isolated, on which is placed a device or a material under test. The platform is full of sensors that show exactly how the electrical discharge struck the object tested. When the plant is in operation, the static charge in the "hot zone" is so great that the hair of anyone who stands up. Lightning is still a matter of deep exploration, and several burnt trees around the test serves to remind us that lightning is very difficult to control. The research center Istra has conducted numerous tests since the Soviet times. The latest tests were designed to protect against lightning for the Sukhoi, the Russian Superjet. Since the structure is very expensive, it is enabled only for special occasions.
Unlike the famous High Frequency Auroral Research Program (HAARP) facility active in the United States, the Marx generator in Istra has never been thought to modulate   the time, but as HAARP was involved in designing weapons for the future. Next to the research facility there is another test center, called "Allure." It 'a simulator stationary electromagnetic pulse (EMP) required to test the Hardware resiliency military and civil aviation with electromagnetic pulses of natural and artificial character. An EMP created by a nuclear explosion is capable of causing damage to electronic equipment terminals, so the ability to create an artificial EMP, especially without   to detonate a nuclear device, it is useful in the military. That's why EMP weapon is the dream of a general in any country. The complex Allure was destined to become part of a grandiose building science, with a high dome 118.4 meters and 236.5 meters wide, but when the building was
almost ready, the structure imploded, collapsing the early morning of January 25, 1985. The building was never rebuilt, although its circular base could be   as seen from space (coordinates 55 ° 55 '8 "N, 36 ° 49' 7" E). Although the dome collapsed due to errors in its construction, the collapse has had historical consequences unforeseen. The senior official of the Communist Party of the Soviet Moscow to oversee the construction of the dome Istra was fired from his job and sent a detachment   remote as punishment.
He was replaced by fellow communist Boris Yeltsin, who was invited to work in Moscow and became the first president of Russia.

funzionano. Unico problema: trovarli!

A favorite theme of science fiction is "the portal"--an extraordinary opening in space or time that connects travelers to distant realms. A good portal is a shortcut, a guide, a door into the unknown. If only they actually existed....
It turns out that they do, sort of, and a NASA-funded researcher at the University of Iowa has figured out how to find them."We call them X-points or electron diffusion regions," explains plasma physicist Jack Scudder of the University of Iowa. "They're places where the magnetic field of Earth connects to the magnetic field of the Sun, creating an uninterrupted path leading from our own planet to the sun's atmosphere 93 million miles away." Observations by NASA's THEMIS spacecraft and Europe's Cluster probes suggest that these magnetic portals open and close dozens of times each day. They're typically located a few tens of thousands of kilometers from Earth where the geomagnetic field meets the onrushing solar wind. Most portals are small and short-lived; others are yawning, vast, and sustained. Tons of energetic particles can flow through the openings, heating Earth's upper atmosphere, sparking geomagnetic storms, and igniting bright polar auroras. NASA is planning a mission called "MMS," short for Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission, due to launch in 2014, to study the phenomenon. Bristling with energetic particle detectors and magnetic sensors, the four spacecraft of MMS will spread out in Earth's magnetosphere and surround the portals to observe how they work. Just one problem: Finding them. Magnetic portals are invisible, unstable, and elusive. They open and close without warning "and there are no signposts to guide us in," notes Scudder.
Actually, there are signposts, and Scudder has found them. Portals form via the process of magnetic reconnection. Mingling lines of magnetic force from the sun and Earth criss-cross and join to create the openings. "X-points" are where the criss-cross takes place. The sudden joining of magnetic fields can propel jets of charged particles from the X-point, creating an "electron diffusion region."
To learn how to pinpoint these events, Scudder looked at data from a space probe that orbited Earth more than 10 years ago. "In the late 1990s, NASA's Polar spacecraft spent years in Earth's magnetosphere," explains Scudder, "and it encountered many X-points during its mission." Because Polar carried sensors similar to those of MMS, Scudder decided to see how an X-point looked to Polar. "Using Polar data, we have found five simple combinations of magnetic field and energetic particle measurements that tell us when we've come across an X-point or an electron diffusion region. A single spacecraft, properly instrumented, can make these measurements." This means that single member of the MMS constellation using the diagnostics can find a portal and alert other members of the constellation. Mission planners long thought that MMS might have to spend a year or so learning to find portals before it could study them. Scudder's work short cuts the process, allowing MMS to get to work without delay. It's a shortcut worthy of the best portals of fiction, only this time the portals are real. And with the new "signposts" we know how to find them.
