I residenti di una città di poco meno di 20.000 persone sono stati testimoni di una palla di fuoco seguita da una esplosione nel cielo. L'evento è stato causato da un meteorite esploso nell'impatto con l'atmosfera terrestre. L'impatto non ha causato danni a persone o cose, ma era abbastanza grande da illuminare il cielo notturno.Una guida turistica locale che, che accompagna turisti ad osservare  l'aurora boreale, aveva la sua macchina fotografica a portata di mano ed è stato in grado di scattare una fotografia dell'accaduto. Yuichi Takasaka ha catturaro l'immagine da Vee Lake.Secondo Takasaka alle 02:13 ora locale, una stella cadente ha attraversato in cielo da ovest a nord per poi esplodere e "era cosi splendente che ho dovuto chiudere gli occhi".Secondo Peter Brown, professore di fisica presso l'Università occidentale di Londra, Ontario, la meteora era probabilmente non più di un metro di diametro.
